The JP Morgan Healthcare Investor Conference (JPM) typically attracts more than 20,000 prominent health care players and investors worldwide to San Francisco annually for a by-invitation only health care investment symposium and other related events.

The University of Chicago Life Sciences Affinity Group (LSAG) will be hosting a fireside chat with Dr. James Madara, CEO of American Medical Association, on January 13 to highlight digital health, health innovations inside and outside of 2016 JPM.

The fireside chat will be held at the University Club San Francisco, a few blocks from Union Square.

We will have cocktails from 6 - 7 p.m. and fireside chat from 7 – 8:30 p.m.

James L. Madara, MD, Executive vice president and CEO, American Medical Association.
James L. Madara, MD, serves as executive vice president and CEO of the American Medical Association, the nation’s largest physician organization. An accomplished academic medical center physician, medical scientist and administrator, Dr. Madara, prior to joining the AMA, served as Timmie Professor and chair of pathology and laboratory medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine before assuming the Thompson Distinguished Service Professorship and deanship at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. During his deanship at Chicago, which also extended to the university’s renowned Biological Sciences Division,

Dr. Madara also served as CEO of the University of Chicago Medical Center, bringing together the university’s biomedical research, teaching and clinical activities. As CEO, he engineered significant new affiliations with community hospitals, teaching hospital systems, community Federally Qualified Health Centers on Chicago’s South Side, as well as with national research organizations.

Dr. Madara is a noted academic pathologist and an authority on epithelial cell biology and on gastrointestinal disease. He has published more than 200 original papers and chapters, making important contributions to understanding the biology of the cells that line the digestive tract. His work has garnered both national and international awards. 

Dr. Madara has served as president of the American Board of Pathology and as editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Pathology.

Dr. Madara will make an announcement about AMA's founding of a San Francisco-based integrated innovation company the week of the JP Morgan conference.

Laura A. Brege, Chicago Booth MBA’1982, Managing Director, Cervantes Life Science Partners
Before founding Cervantes Life Science Advisors, Laura Brege was President and Chief Executive Officer of Nodality, Inc.  Ms. Brege has over 25 years of executive management experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and venture capital industries.

Prior to joining Nodality, Ms. Brege held several senior-level positions at Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc., including Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. While at Onyx, she led multiple functions, including commercialization, strategic planning, corporate development, and medical, scientific and government affairs.

Prior to Onyx, Ms. Brege was a General Partner at Red Rock Capital Management, a venture capital firm in Palo Alto specializing in early stage financing for technology companies.   Investments were primarily in software and services.

Previously Ms. Brege was SVP and Chief Financial Officer at COR Therapeutics, helping build the company from an early stage R&D company through commercial launch of a successful cardiovascular product.

Earlier in her career, she served as Chief Financial Officer at Flextronics, Inc., a global electronics manufacturing company and Treasurer of The Cooper Companies, a broadly diversified industrial company.

She serves on the Board of Directors of several public companies: Acadia Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Aratana Therapeutics, Inc. and Pacira Pharmaceuticals, Inc.  In addition Ms. Brege is a member of the Board of Directors of BayBio, an industry organization and is Chair of the Foundation Board of Trustees of Ohio University.

Ms. Brege earned her undergraduate degrees in economics and in political science from Ohio University (Honors Tutorial College) and her MBA degree from the University of Chicago. 

Matt Douglass, SVP of Customer Experience and Co-Founder, Practice Fusion

As Practice Fusion’s technology co-founder, Matt created the SaaS technology framework that enables rapid development of the world’s largest EHR cloud platform, now used daily by over 100,000 medical professionals. He is passionate about unlocking health data from paper charts in an effort to streamline health communication and give patients direct access to their information.

Matt is going to share the insider story about the founding of Practice Fusion and how the company executed a breakthrough business model brilliantly to become the #1 cloud based platform for physicians and patients.
